Welcome to Reception's online blog.

Our new topic…Castles and Fairytales

After half term we will be starting a new class topic in Reception…. ‘Castles and Fairytales‘.

For the ‘Castles’ part of the topic the children will be learning all about medieval life, castle jobs and the legend of Robin Hood. We will be designing and making our own shields,  painting Knights, building castles and much more.

For the ‘Fairytale’ part of the topic we will be focusing on the traditional stories of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White. The children will learn to make character descriptions/comparisons and they will have the opportunity to write/make invitations, letters, crowns and storyboards.

We will be celebrating our topic with a ‘Fairytale Themed Day’, where the children can come to school in fairytale fancy dress and we will play games, listen to medieval music and have a magical themed party picnic.

We hope the children will thoroughly enjoy this topic.

Dinosaurs

Last week we were lucky enough to have a visitor in school…

Mr Smith from Weston Road Academy came to see us to talk about dinosaurs and bring us a large collection of fossils to look at.

We were all given the opportunity to hold and feel the fossils various textures and Mr Smith explained to us that many of these fossilised creatures would have lived at the same time as the dinosaurs.

The children were very excited to ask questions and were able to use some lovely vocabulary to describe the fossils as we passed them around. Mr Smith was impressed by the children’s ever growing knowledge of dinosaurs and his visit prompted many more interesting questions from the children.

Thank you Mr Smith, for a great visit, we hope to see you again soon.

Dinosaurs

During this half term, the Reception class will be journeying back in time, around 65 million years, to learn all about the different types of dinosaurs that once roamed our planet.

We will be learning about a selection of dinosaurs, their habitats, food preferences and hunting skills/protective body armour.

We will also be making fossils, measuring dinosaur footprints and even digging for dinosaur bones when we spend an afternoon as archaeologists.
